Come to the edge – Feeling all, Healing all

“Come to the edge,” he said.
“We can’t, we’re afraid!” they responded.
“Come to the edge,” he said.
“We can’t, We will fall!” they responded.
“Come to the edge,” he said.
And so they came.
And he pushed them.
And they flew.”

Guillaume Apollinaire

I have found that when people come to The Journey (www.journeyhealing.com) it almost always means that they are very serious about addressing and letting go of their issues. They’ve often reached a point where they’ve finally had enough, where they’re prepared to risk all and leap into a place of uncertainty.

This is very much a leap of faith, a leap into unknowing, a letting go of expectation, of trying to control outcomes. And it is in this letting go, in giving over responsibility for healing to grace if you like, that profound healing can and very often occurs.

We all inevitably have expectations, of course, and that’s fine, in fact an important part of The Journey process is setting a clear intention. I’ve noticed in my 13 years as a practitioner though that many people hold expectations that are restrictive to their healing, that are more about escaping difficult feelings than about being free.

Attempting to escape our feelings simply doesn’t work. We’ve all attempted it, especially as children (usually when an event is too traumatic to bear), but all we manage to do is to lock our feelings away within our bodies, where they lurk like some malevolent beast waiting to pounce. At best this creates stress and over-reactions in our current lives and at worst it can lead to serious disease.

My experience is that true healing involves becoming open to all of our feelings, of freeing them up to come and go within us, allowing them pass through us without holding onto them or fearing them in any way. This is the essential work of The Journey and it very often has a profoundly healing emotional and physical impact.

The Journey process has a magic to it that takes you into your body, exactly to where your blocked feelings – and associated memories and words – are held, to where you locked them away many years ago. It enables you to access and reconnect with these feelings, to experience them fully again in safety, and let them go and flow at last in a healthy way.

Healing then is not about getting rid of or escaping your feelings. Quite the contrary, it’s about leaping into and feeling all of your feelings, very much including the stuck feelings that should belong only to your past but are causing you present harm. It’s about letting these stuck feelings flow freely again, as they naturally should. And in doing this you begin to feel all of your feelings again in a healthy way and, as such, you feel fully alive, whole and healed.
